One For Sorrow

One For Sorrow is a meditation on superstition, resilience, and the unseen forces that shape our perception of the world. The embedded magpie feather, found on a walk, becomes both a relic of folklore and a quiet act of defiance against its ominous connotations. While magpies have long been associated with sorrow, their feathers, freely given to the earth, can also be symbols of transformation, endurance, and the unseen threads connecting us to something greater.

The painting’s three towering structures stand like watchful sentinels, each representing individuals trapped within cycles of fear and superstition. The structures glow with fractured light, as if glimpses of possibility lie just beyond reach. The dark, dripping textures suggest the weight of old beliefs, while vibrant, layered hues hint at the magic and creativity waiting to be discovered beyond the barriers we build for ourselves.

Scattered throughout the composition, three small, enigmatic boxes emerge as -ortals of creation and mystery. These hidden spaces challenge the viewer to seek the extraordinary in the everyday, to step beyond fear and embrace the unknown. One For Sorrow ultimately asks us to reconsider the symbols we assign meaning to and find beauty, rather than dread, in the gifts the world leaves at our feet.
