Ogmore Castle ~ Stepping in the Mists of Time
Nestled along the banks of the River Ewenny in Glamorgan, Wales, Ogmore Castle stands as a testament to Norman fortification from the early 12th century. Established by William de Londres around 1106, the castle formed part of a defensive trio, alongside Coity and Newcastle, guarding the region against Welsh uprisings. Initially constructed from earth and timber, Ogmore Castle was later fortified with stone, featuring one of the oldest oblong keeps in South Wales. Its strategic location protected a vital river crossing, and a unique rock-cut ditch that filled with seawater at high tide added an extra layer of defense.
In Ogmore Castle ~ Stepping in the Mists of Time I’ve used black and white oil paint to depict not just the physical presence of this historic site but also the emotional resonance it holds. The painting’s monochromatic palette is purposeful to reflect a dreamlike quality, evoking memories of a childhood spent exploring these ancient grounds. The iconic stepping stones, which allow passage across the river, become symbols of fleeting moments and the gradual erosion of time.
My hope is that the piece immerses the viewer in an ethereal atmosphere where history and memory intertwine. The brushwork is purpsoefully soft and diffused, allowing the forms of the castle and landscape to dissolve into the mist, echoing the way memories fade and shift with time. The reflective surface of the water mirrors both the physical world and the intangible realm of recollection.
The composition works to guide the eye through the landscape, with the stepping stones leading toward the weathered silhouette of the castle. This subtle visual journey invites contemplation on the impermanence of human experience and the enduring presence of ancient places.
This work blends personal history with broader themes of time and memory. The restrained color scheme and attention to texture allow the viewer to connect with the piece on an emotional level, while the shadow box framing adds depth and dimension to the presentation.
Ogmore Castle ~ Stepping in the Mists of Time is a love letter to my childhood and an attempt to preserve the essence of this historic site. It’s a comment on the ephemeral beauty of childhood memories that linger like echoes in the mist.
